My Puppy has distemper and he is getting treated by a vet every other day and i just want to know if there is anything I can do to help him survive while he is at home . i’m only 16 years old and cant afford much with my job so i am taking him to a very trustworthy vet that i know in Tijuana. is there anything i can do to help him fight this off ? if you have any information it would really help. i dont care if i have to go on with no sleep i will do anything i can to help my baby. he is only about to be 3 months old. thank you . !

Treatment: Distemper must be treated by a veterinarian. Antibiotics are used to prevent secondary bacterial infections, even though they have no effect on the distemper virus. Supportive treatment includes intravenous fluids to correct dehydration, medications to prevent vomiting and diarrhea, and anticonvulsants and sedatives to control seizures.

From WebMD.

Extrapolating from that, supportive care much like for parvo. If he’s drinking, half pedialyte half water – even if you have to dropper it into him, he must be kept hydrated. If not eating, rub a little karo syrup or sugar water on his gums (he doesn’t need to swallow it) every few hours to prevent hypoglycemia. Keep him warm, and as comfortable as possible, close to you as much as possible. Hopefully the vet is providing the antibiotics and any other meds as needed. And be SURE to keep him away from other unvaccinated animals. Not only would it endanger them – if they’re carrying anything else, it would further endanger him.

Best of luck to you and your dog,

Keep your dog warm to help him fight the infection. Encourage him to drink as much clean water as possible. Keep his body clean when he has diarrhea, accidental urination, or drooling.
Most dogs with distemper will die even with the best of care.

Pedialite for babies is best. It helped my puppy recover back when got really bad parvo and the vet said he was gonna die.
