Choosing Dog Crates and Kennels

You need to go out to work to be able to provide for your needs and those of your dog. In order to leave home and tend to your daily activities, generally you will seek to have dog crates and kennels at your disposition so you can enjoy peace of mind while working. But that is not all what dog crates and kennels are good for. They are useful also when participating in a contest, having to undergo hospitalization or being left in a pension.

Even though the general use of dog crates and kennels is to avoid accidents resulting of adventurous exploring of the house causing them harm. When you are participating in a dog contest or show, they will be perceived as a familiar place to calm down and unwind from the tensions of the contest.

When you bring back your dog from the vet, you can protect the dog from other household pets that may want to be playful and or want to “help” your convalescent dog. Attitudes that are undoubtedly out of love, but that can worsen the condition of a sick pup.

Having a crate ready when your puppy arrives at home will give you the time to slowly introduce them to the dog training that you need to have in order for them to feel comfortable with the crate. There are many dog crates available in the market, yet the only way they will work for you both is through positive reinforcement.

Training your pup to accept his or her stay inside dog crates and kennels will also be beneficial if you ever need to have your dog in a pension. This type of training will also be useful if your pet is hospitalized or needs to travel.

Regardless if whether your pup is young or old, having a dog crate will require that you provide him or her with a comfortable dog bed that will allow your dog to lie comfortably while having to stay inside. Your dog crates and kennels provider can help you choose the right model.

Naturally, you must never expect kennels to be the same thing than leaving your pup to rump around in your house or backyard, but they WILL protect him or her from the accidents that can happen from unsupervised play. Dogs are small children and as such, they often do not measure the risks that circle their daily life; a pair of expensive shoes might be even tastier than the kibble that you left for him or her.

One thing that your dog will not be able to get initially from a kennel is the feeling of total freedom if he/she has been an outside dog. But in time your dog will become accustomed to the new surroundings. And it is up to you to decide what is best for your cherished pet.

You will find there are many unique dog products to choose from. You can add spice to your dog’s life by adding a nice dog bed and blanket along with your dogs favorite toy.

In some instances you may have to have your dog carrier or dog crate serve other useful duties. For instance, they may function as a temporary dog house while you are travelling. Still, it is important to make your dog feel comfortable and the best way to do so is by adding a cozy dog bed.

The proper bed is very important if your pup has an skeletal problem or a joint condition that requires him to have orthopedic dog beds. Yet, while these might not fit properly, perhaps some of the heated dog beds will. You will need to call your vet on that matter.

There are many great dog crates and designer dog beds in the market today in addition to all the other great dog accessories available to make your dog more comfortable.

Orthopedic Dog Beds for your pet

Many people who have pets want to make sure that they are doing everything they can to give their pet the best experience possible. For some, this means doing and purchasing specific things (such as orthopedic dog beds).

While some people will go to extreme lengths to make life incredible for their pet (with pet hotels and pet spas), others can simply not afford to do that much for their pet. While pet hotels and pet spas may take care of pets in a form of pampering, there are other easy ways to make life for your pet better. Orthopedic dog beds, collars, carriers, and toys can each add to or take away from the experience of your pet dog.

Orthopedic Dog Beds

Orthopedic dog beds often get a bad reputation. When people think of orthopedic dog beds, they think of something that is completely unnecessary. Many people do not think of the fact that many dogs have joint problems, however. One of the best ways to help with this joint pain and suffering is to purchase this type of dog beds.

The orthopedic dog bed is a bed that is made from a special type of foam. This foam simply helps the dog to have a more comfortable bed to lie on. This orthopedic dog bed is the best bed for the dogs who suffer from joint and muscle pain, as it gives them a place to relax and be comfortable.

Collars Are Important

Dog collars are something that many take for granted. Some people like to pick the dog collar that the use on their dog based on looks. Other people simply pick the dog collar that they use based on price.

Keeping your dog in mind when choosing the collar for it is one of the better ways to make sure that your dog feels comfortable in every situation. These collars may cost more, which will bug those who do not like to spend money on their dog. Taking the extra money to do so is the best way to make your dog happy with its collar.

Carriers

Dog carriers are a necessary evil for all pet owners. Those who own dogs need to be able to transport the dog from one point to another. While many people will like to move their dog in their car without making them get into a carrier, others require a carrier to restrain the dog and to make sure that it stays in place. Dog carriers are important for many owners, but it is important to make sure that the carrier is the right carrier for your dog. You need to make sure that the carriers is of the right width and height, as your dog should be able to move around.

Toys

Dog toys are something that nearly every dog has. When you think of all of the dog toys that you have seen, however, you will realize that it is very basic; many dogs simply have bones or pieces of rope for their toys.

Many people do not understand that there are toys out there, on the market, that can actually help your dog. Some of these toys aim to help the teeth of the dog, while others attempt to strengthen them. Choosing toys that are safe and helpful to your dog will help you to make your dog as comfortable and happy as possible.

Orthopedic dog beds may easily seem like too much for a family pet. They feel that their dog does not need an orthopedic dog bed, and that any other type of product does not garner much attention. Taking care of your dog is very important, however, as you need to make sure that you dog is comfortable and happy. To make your dog comfortable and happy, you need to be able to offer them the products that can do so.

Where to Find the Perfect Dog House Plans?

It is not that easy to find building plans for a proper dog house, most of the time large local hardware stores provide all kind of building plans for small DIY jobs in and around the house, but we found out by experience that almost none have dog house plans available. So, what is the best place to find the perfect plan to build a dog house for your dog.

Building a proper dog house seems like a fairly simple DIY job but it is in fact a bit more than that, it is the place where your dog needs to sleep in any kind of whether, so it needs to be dry, not to hot in summer and not to cold in winter, and your dog should be able to sleep without any draft, it should be safe so a pointy roof is out of the question because that attracts wasps and hornets to nest and it should be easy to clean.

When you look at all of the demands that should be incorporated in proper dog house plans you realise that the typical Pluto style dog houses are not suited for a outdoor dog. You need to invest some time in finding the right dog house plan for your dog and the climate you live in. And if you like to make a family project out it, you can, with the proper preparation, build it in one or two weekends.

Finding dog house plans that fit your needs.

As we said before most hardware stores can not help you with good dog house plans and you can try it at your local library but we do not give you much change to find it there either. In fact a good place to find the perfect dog house plans is right here on the internet, the internet can provide you with plans, advise and you can meet other dog owners who have already build a dog house from a plan before.

Some websites will give their plans away for free other websites ask a, most of the time, reasonable price for the plan just like the plans you can buy in a hardware store. But you will be able to see the dog houses as a drawing and with pictures. Read all the specifications and look at what other dog owners experienced when they build a dog house according these plans.

When you have made your choice you need to read the list of materials and tools and make sure that you have everything before you start building.

Criteria for proper dog house plans

Not a pointy Pluto style roof but a slightly sloped roof, water can drain away and your dog can also sit or lay on the roof. For practical reasons the roof should be on hinges so it is accessible for cleaning.

The floor of the dog house should be of the ground so cold and moisture can not enter the floor.

Removable wind wall against draft and so the dog is able to heat the sleeping area with it’s own body heat. The size of the area should be adjusted for your size dog.

The dog house plans should also have an insulation plan to help the dog maintain a good temperature.

There are many websites that have dog house plans, do not immediately go for the free ones there are some dog house plans that will cost you about $ 30 but actually worth twice the money. You make a dog house for many many years, so it is wise to invest some time and money to make sure that your dog is comfortable and you have an easy job cleaning and maintaining the dog house.

How to Train Your Dog to Run on a Dog Treadmill

If you would like to teach your dog to run on a dog treadmill, you need to ensure you have trained it extensively so that it is able to use the treadmill on a regular basis without the need for continuous reinforcement.

In order to train a dog to use dog treadmills, you should follow these easy steps:

1) First, allow your dog time to habituate itself to the treadmill by allowing it to explore it when the treadmill is both on and off. Every time your dog goes closer to the treadmill and does not act afraid, be sure and reward it with either praise or a treat, so that it associates the treadmill with positive things.

2) After your dog is used to the dog treadmill, you want your dog to feel comfortable standing on the treadmill as well. It is best to start by keeping the dog treadmill turned off. Lead your dog on top of the treadmill (use a leash if you like) and while it is standing on the treadmill be sure and reinforce it often by giving it both praise and treats (if you use a clicker, click only when the dog is standing comfortably on the treadmill – if it appears anxious, try to wait).

3) Once your dog is comfortably on the dog treadmill, it is time to turn it on for the first time. Always start at the absolute slowest speed possible. Your dog may be frightened at first, and if it shows fear you need to remember these two things:
a. Do not reinforce the fear by acting very worried and hugging your dog immediately. This will only teach the dog that the fear was warranted. If you remain calm, your dog will remain calm.
b. Do not push your dog back onto the treadmill either. Instead, continue to reinforce your dog with praise and treats whenever it is doing anything positive on the treadmill.

4) When your dog is finally walking on the treadmill for a while, do not make it walk for too long. Although it may even be enjoying the walk, it is best not to risk any stress or tiredness right away, which could cause the dog to associate the dog treadmill with negative feelings. Instead, continue to praise and give treats and, after about 5 to 10 minutes, turn the treadmill off and allow your dog to rest.

5) The next day, repeat the process again. And again, use only the slowest speed, except this time you will want to increase the time the dog spends on the treadmill. Constant praise and treats are still necessary, and if your dog shows any signs of getting too tired, it is okay to stop the treadmill and try again the next day. However, if your dog appears afraid, the same rules still apply – do not immediately turn off the dog treadmill, otherwise the dog again risks associating the treadmill with fear. Try to calm the fear with petting and praise.

6) Now that your dog has had some practice walking on the treadmill for a while it is okay to speed it up. Again, continuous praise and treats, and not too fast. Any change you make on the treadmill, even if your dog appears to be enjoying it should always be done in moderation to prevent any fear.

7) Once your dog has been using the dog treadmill successfully you are ready to allow your dog to stay on the treadmill for a long period of time at any speed you want. Try to keep the speed down while your dog is gaining strength, but once you know your pet has the strength to stand for a long time you are ready to allow your dog daily exercise on the dog treadmill.

Dog treadmills are a great way to keep your dog happy, healthy and fit. If you correctly train your dog to use the treadmill, you can be sure it will appreciate the exercise for years to come.

How to Teach a Dog to Stop Barking

Hearing a dog happily barking as it chases after a ball in the woods can be a wonderful sound, but if the neighbors are complaining and you and your family are suffering from having a dog that barks constantly that you cannot control, you will probably want to learn how to teach a dog to stop barking.

The first thing to consider is why the dog is barking so much. A normal puppy or young adult dog is like a baby in that it will bark when it wants attention or has a need, for example if it is hungry or thirsty, wants to poop or needs exercise. With most dogs, if you figure out what they want, you can supply it and that is the end of the problem.

But some dogs bark a lot more than this. This is most likely if they are either kept in the house alone all day when you are at work, or if they are not getting enough exercise.

In the case of exercise, maybe you are not able to walk a big dog as often or for as long as it needs it. You could be sick or not have time, or in some climates it may be difficult to get out a lot in winter.

Letting the dog in the backyard will probably not be enough. It knows the backyard too well and there are not enough new and interesting sights and scents to keep it occupied. Instead, consider hiring a dog walking service.

Some dogs will bark whenever they see or sense someone approaching. This is what is known as ‘reactive barking’: barking as a reaction to events.

If a dog barks reactively, it is often because the dog has learnt to act as a guard dog in the past. If you have an adult dog it could have been trained to do this from a puppy by a previous owner. Perhaps it used to live in an isolated area and was rewarded for barking whenever there was a noise outside. If you live in a city, this will mean a lot of barking!

If the dog is used to being rewarded for barking and has been specially trained to do it, it will not understand that you do not welcome the noise. In this situation you may have to consider finding another home for the dog – or moving out of town yourself!

Another possibility is that as a puppy it learned this behavior from adult dogs and has simply never been taught not to bark. In this situation you may have more success. You can train it to be quiet in the same way you would train it to do anything else: use the command ‘Quiet!’ and always reward for obedience.

Remembering to reward the dog for being quiet is difficult because it is a non-behavior: instead of doing something that demands your attention and a reward, like fetching back a ball, it is not doing something. It is easy for you to give a sigh of relief at the sudden silence and move on. But it is vital to remember the reward; otherwise the training will never be successful.

If the dog is alone in the house all day while you work, it is not surprising that it gets bored. Dogs love company and leaving a dog alone for 10 hours a day, as many people do, are sure to have an effect. If it wasn’t barking it would probably be either tearing the furniture apart or becoming seriously depressed. So what can you do to stop your lonely barking dog from driving the neighbours crazy?

First, the dog walking service is something that you might want to consider in this situation too. You will need to find a service that you trust enough to give them a key to the house. Then they can come when you are not home, pick up the dog and take it walking. This will break up the dog’s day and make it much more accepting of the times that it is left alone. You want to make sure that the service will walk the dog as close to the middle of the day as possible.

Other things that you can do to keep the dog calm while you are working:

* Close the drapes or shades. The best is to have shades or shutters that the dog cannot get behind. This will keep their focus indoors, so they do not look out the window barking at everything that moves outside. But this will increase boredom so it is not enough by itself.

* Get another pet, either a cat or another dog. Even an aquarium can help to keep the dog interested.

* If you leave the television on low then your dog will have the moving pictures to break up the monotony.

A dog that barks at every little thing that happens, even when you are home, may have a problem – for example if it barks every time that you stand up or sit down. This is abnormal behavior and could be due to a difficult early life (especially if it is a rescue dog) or some physical condition or illness. You should see a veterinarian in this case, because you probably will not be able to teach the dog to stop barking by yourself.

Teaching A Dog To Stay Is Crucial For His Safety

We as humans have a unique bond with our dogs and it’s our duty to make sure we keep them as safe as possible. In order to accomplish this, we need to train the dog properly and teaching a dog to stay is a critical part of this training as it could keep your dog from running headlong into a dangerous situation.

One thing you need to do when training is make sure your dog knows that you are the boss. Frequently using the ‘stay’ command is a good way to do this. ‘Stay’ means that your dog will have to be still in one place while you walk around, and can’t move until you give permission. If you aren’t the alpha in your home, the opposite thing will usually be taking place.

The first step is to teach your dog the “sit” command. The best way to do this is by firmly saying “sit” while giving a hand signal. The signal that I’ve found works best is snapping my fingers while pointing my index finger at an angle toward the ground. This accomplishes several objectives. First, the snapping of the fingers will get your dog’s attention. Some people elect to use a clicker, but I find that this ties up my hands, making it difficult to give other hand signals. Second, the pointing of the index finger shows the dog the correct angle to move his rear end. This method works incredibly well for teaching dogs the “sit” command.

When the dog is in the “sit” position, hold your palm and fingers up and firmly say “Stay”. Do not raise your voice any higher than needed to be heard by the dog. Make sure the “Stay” hand signal is not similar to any others you may use with the dog.

Your dog will most likely try to follow you. When this happens, repeat your unique hand gestures for the “sit” and “stay” commands. If your dog continues to follow you, there is a trick to get them to comply with the “sit” command. Hold a treat or one of your dog’s favorite toys in your hand. Slowly move this over your dog’s head until it is a little behind his eyes. Make sure that it is still in your dog’s line of vision. This movement will force your dog’s chin to move up. If your dog chooses to rotate around rather than just moving his chin, move the toy or treat over their head again until he does move his chin up and sits down. Praise your dog and try the “stay” command again.

Eventually your dog will “get it” and will stay, unfortunately your work is not done at this point. The next step in teaching a dog to stay is to get him to stay as you move further and further away. So, repeat the stay command and take a few steps away from him. Most of the time, the farther away you get the less obedient they will be. Remember, you are their master and they want to follow you.

One thing you can do to get around this is to put a collar and lengthy leash on your dog. Use a tree to secure the leash behind the dog and hold it in front of the dog. Allow your dog to stand up and step forward, gently pulling on the rope and using the standard voice command and gesture. Be careful not to jerk your dog too hard and upset his concentration. Your goal should be to contain his behavior, not punish him. If you prefer to use another person rather than a tree you can, but it may confuse the dog and he won’t know who is giving the commands.

If your dog lies down after you step away while practicing “stay,” they will not be remaining still and will therefore not be following your command. You will have to have them sit again, and because of this, you will possibly have to teach your dog an “up” and “sit” command combination before you teach your dog to “stay.” Your dog’s breed and individual personality will play a role in how long it will take your dog to learn the “stay” command, but almost all dogs will eventually be able to learn this useful skill.

After the dog learns to hold in a stay positions for a few moments, teach “Come” Change your normal tone of voice, and use specific hand signals. The “Come” gesture should not be similar to other gestures used in training.

Teaching a dog to stay can take a bit of patience, but it is quite important that your pet learn this command. Each time you practice the “stay” command with your dog, make sure that you progressively make the stay longer. You will know that your dog has successfully learned the command when you can go back inside of the house and your dog remains stationary outside. Of course, once you do get to this point, make sure that you release and praise him after a minute.
